Other Organizations
Members and attenders at HMM are also involved with the organizations listed below. If you wish to become involved with any of these projects, please send a message indicating your interest to the Peace and Social Concerns Committee.
Nineteen Friends, many of whom have served in public roles in Quaker organizations, are gravely concerned about the deliberate falsehoods and coordinated efforts currently underway to subvert our democracy. If this politically motivated takeover movement succeeds, any hope of progress on the urgent issues of our time will be lost. We invite Friends and friends of Friends to enter into a national dialogue to discern how best to respond to this urgent challenge.
Hartford Meeting has long and deep ties to the Hartford South Park Inn homeless shelter. We support the shelter by volunteering to prepare an evening meal on a monthly basis. One member serves as President of the SPI board of directors. At present, SPI has been contracted to operating an overnight warming center and we are currently holding a donation drive for supplies for this center. To get involved, contact the Peace & Social Concerns Committee.
Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP)
Several of our Meeting members have had long-term involvement with AVP, working primarily with prison inmates. The core of the program is workshops of about 20 hours in which facilitators guide participants in ways to practice dealing nonviolently with conflict. “Conflict is inevitable; violence doesn’t have to be.” In a prison, the facilitation team always includes incarcerated members. To learn more about the process of becoming a trained facilitator, please contact the Peace & Social Concerns Committee.
